What Makes a Great Outdoor Fitness Class?

Updated: May 12, 2020

Approaching 20 years in the fitness industry, has made me think what the difference between bad, good and great really is.

1. Coaching

As a trainer, liking fitness is definitely NOT enough. Genuinely wanting to help others and getting personal reward from it is essential. In my opinion, this is one of the main reasons so many personal trainers just don't last in the business.

Being able to connect with and coach such a range in personality types, takes a special person! While many instructors have a fixed approach (often drill sergeants or extremely supportive ones) can win fans, the truly great instructor is a chameleon. Being able to change coaching style according to the individual and programming, can lead to getting way more from each participant.

2. Community & Culture

While large group classes are common place, many might not have tried training in a small group. In quality small group training, you are not just another face in the crowd. The trainer can build a much clearer understanding of you, knowing your goals, strengths, weaknesses, what type of instruction and motivation brings out the best in you.

A coach who creates positive culture in classes where support, encouragement with other focused and motivated people really lifts you up.

3. Programming

While a class can be delivered without much thought or planning, a great instructor draws on his experience, knowledge and is always learning. Learning both from courses, study, their own training and other instructors sessions.

Planning based on knowing the people that come to sessions, helping them master movements and progress them towards their goals.

Intelligent exercise selection and planning can make for a fun, engaging session. A clear knowledge for easier and harder options to make the session work fo everyone

4. Location

Ideally a location that help connect people with nature, escape the hustle and bustle with minimal distractions apart from a nice view! Escaping the office, getting all the benefits of the great outdoors, mental and physical.

5. Equipment

Firstly the right choice of equipment can make or break a class. My classes exclusively use the TRX Suspension Trainer. Once you have tried it you'll know why!

While some trainers call this set-up 'Small Group Personal Training' whatever you call it, you need to try it!
